A little bit of history
In 1979 the Council offered the club a site in the Memorial Park, but a secret ballot at the AGM decided that the club would stay at Rocky Nook and use the building fund on renovations at Rocky Nook Bowling Clubrooms.
In the 1990’s the club was again offered a lease at the Mt Albert War Memorial Reserve and this time it was accepted.
In 1998 the resource consent to build the clubrooms was approved. It took five years to achieve this.
In July 1998 the chairman of our building committee Arch Jelley, wrote to Les Mills, the mayor of Auckland and concluded his letter saying:
“We have put hundreds of hours into this project and we would like to complete it before we bloody well die”
The new clubroom opened for play on the 19 June 2000 and was officially opened by the last Mayor of Mt Albert, Frank Ryan on the 27 July. The President, Anne McCallum in her speech at the opening thanked everyone for the great support we had had in raising funds for the building of the new clubroom in a variety of ways; stocktaking at the Warehouse, raffles, the trading table, baking, donations and the cleaning of the clubroom. It was a great team effort.
The Allen Clarke room was officially opened in 2005 by club member Les Roberts who joined the club in 1970. The new room was named after Allen whose generous bequest to the club, was sufficient to repay the amount we had borrowed from Auckland City.
